1. Upgrade to iTunes 10.5
Prerequisite of iOS 5 upgrade is – you need iTunes 10.5. iTunes 10.5 is available for both Mac and PC. Upgrade to iTunes 10.5 by launching iTunes and check for updates.
2. Cleanup your iPod or iPhone or iPad
Before you upgrade to iOS 5, take some time to to cleanup your iPhone, iPad or iPod. Remove the apps, photos, videos, songs etc. Clean up will reduce the time taken for backup of your current hardware and also make you do perform the cleanup, which you always wanted to, but never got to.
3. Upgrade to iOS 5
iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPad and iPad 2. Attach whichever of these device(s) you have and launch iTunes.
Locate your device inside iTunes and click the Update button to upgrade to iOS 5.
Next you will be prompted to download and update option.
Select Download and Update option and your iOS device will be upgraded to iOS 5.
