Find and Delete Empty Folders

Posted by Apurva Tripathi on August 20, 2012 in Windows

Whenever files are automatically deleted, it is often the case that empty folders get left behind. Also, many a times we go over-board in creating folders and sub-folders, however, we never end up using them.

Identifying and cleaning empty folders is a mess, especially when you have lots of folders to deal with. Checking each and every folder for presence or absence of files can be a cumbersome exercise.

Empty folders take up hardly any disk space, but, they do clutter you disk and waste your time when you try to declutter. DeleteEmptyFolders is very quick to use – it simply adds an extra menu command to the context menu in Windows Explorer that appears when you right click on a folder.

Another benefit of DeleteEmptyFolders is when you want to delete a folder you think is empty. Using the Delete Empty Folders command instead of the Windows Delete command means you can’t accidentally delete files if the folder you thought was empty does contain files after all!

What is DeleteEmptyFolders?

DeleteEmptyFolders is an extension for Windows Explorer. It does not run as a standalone application — instead it acts as a command which gets added when you right click one or more folders.

After installing DeleteEmptyFolders, right click on one or more folders in Windows Explorer and you will see the extra command added by DeleteEmptyFolders.

The extra command added by DeleteEmptyFolders is useful in two ways:

i) Helping to prevent accidental deletion of files

This command provides complete peace of mind if you ever want to delete a folder that you think is empty. The usual Windows command to delete a folder will always delete any files and subfolders that a folder contains. By using the DeleteEmptyFolders command, you can be sure you are not accidentally deleting a folder that does contain some files.

ii) Helping tidy folders after files have been deleted

Whenever files are automatically deleted, it is often the case that empty folders get left behind. Possible ways that this can happen include:

  • Using Windows Search to find files and using the results list to delete files.
  • Developers using project maintenance commands such as make clean
  • Developers using a source control system such as Perforce.
DeleteEmptyFolders is a Windows application and costs a mere $5.99

The below image shows the DeleteEmptyFolders panel that shows the results of the scan for empty folders. This panel lets you review the empty folders found before any are deleted. Folders can be removed from the list before the Delete button is pressed, in case there are any you want to keep.
